A Bit of the Family History

Posted on September 25, 2007 - Filed Under Family history

On July 5, 1845, a small ship, the Bark Louise, landed in New York harbor.

barklouis.jpgOn board was the Pulskamp family: Herman Heinrich Pulskamp, wife Maria Katherine, three sons, three daugthers, a niece and a nephew. Baby Gerd Heinrich Ludwig Pulskamp, only eleven weeks old when they boarded the ship in Bremen, died at sea, 21 June 1845.

The family bought a farm in Indiana on 9 August 1845, just weeks after landing, paying $250. They settled in an area near Oldenburg, with many other German Catholic neighbors.

I am a descendant of Herman Heinrich’s grandson John Bernard and am sorry I missed the 2008 gathering, although some of my cousins and uncles attended in Cincinnati.

Are you able to share a copy of the ship’s passenger list ? I have not been able to find this passenger list for this ship in 1845 …

And how can I get a copy of the Church records ?

    Many thanks

How wonderful to connect with a “new” Pulskamp cousin! You can find the records of our family’s trip to America is you misspell their name correctly: Pielskampen I think the Pie mistake is due to a dot of ink above the u. The en at the end of the name makes it somewhat Latin which possibly means the name seemed very strange to the person writing it down. The Pulskamps themselves appear to have been able to read and write but not everyone at the time could. They arrived in New York on July 5, 1845.
My husband and I were in Europe when you posted, hence the delay in responding. Sorry you missed the World Wide Gathering of the Pulskamps in 2008. It was great fun. I am hoping we might gather in 2020 in Merzen, Germany to celebrate the 175 year of their trip. Start saving your money now!
